Lorraine Rann Mertell joined Mackenzie Hughes in 2012 as a partner in the litigation department. She has over 30 years of experience representing individual and corporate clients in a wide variety of civil litigation matters, including: construction site and motor vehicle accidents, product liability and asbestos claims, premises liability and general negligence, commercial and business disputes, contract interpretation, and declaratory actions. Lorraine has appeared before State and Federal trial and appellate courts, as well as administrative and alternative dispute resolution venues.
Lorraine graduated cum laude with a Bachelor of Science degree from St. Lawrence University in 1977, completing a major in both mathematics and physics. She received her Juris Doctorate from the Albany Law School in 1980. In 1981 she was admitted to practice in New York State and the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of New York. She was admitted to practice in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of New York in 1992, and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit in 2001.
Lorraine is a member of the New York State, Onondaga County and Madison
County Bar Associations. She is also a member of the New York State Academy
of Trial Lawyers and a member and on the Board of Trustees of the Northern
District of New York Federal Court Bar Association. In addition, she serves
as President of the Board of Directors of Contact Community Services.
She has served as a judge for Onondaga County's High School Mock Trial
competition, and has been a lecturer at a variety of New York State CLE
She lives in Pompey with her husband Jeff. They are avid sports fans,
including Syracuse University football, basketball and lacrosse. Lorraine
also enjoys gardening and collecting antiques.
